🛠️ Routine RV Maintenance

Hey there, fellow campers , I’ve learned (sometimes the hard way) that a little routine maintenance goes a long way toward keeping your RV out of the shop and on the road. So here’s my down-to-earth list of stuff I actually do—and why it matters.rv maintenance

🛞 1. Wheel Bearings: Grease Is Cheaper Than Tow Trucks

I repack my wheel bearings every year or two, depending on how much I’ve been towing. It’s not glamorous, but it keeps the wheels spinning and prevents overheating. If you’ve ever seen someone stranded with a seized hub, you know why this matters.

🧲 2. Breakaway Cable: That Little Wire Could Save Your Rig

This one’s easy to overlook. The breakaway cable is what activates your trailer brakes if it disconnects from your tow vehicle. I check that it’s not frayed, rusted, or dragging on the ground. It’s a tiny part with a big job.

🔥 3. Water Heater Flush & Inspection: Vinegar Is Your Friend

Once a year, I flush my water heater with white vinegar to clear out the mineral gunk. I also check the anode rod—if it’s eaten up, I replace it. Keeps the tank healthy and the hot showers flowing. Bonus: it’s oddly satisfying to see all the crud come out.

🏠 4. Roof Reseal: Don’t Let Water Win

I climb up (carefully) and inspect every seam, vent, and edge. If the sealant looks cracked or dried out, I patch it with self-leveling lap sealant. Water damage is sneaky and expensive—this is one of those “ounce of prevention” deals.

❄️ 5. A/C Filters & Coils: Breathe Easy, Stay Cool

I clean the A/C filters every couple of months, especially during summer. If I’m feeling ambitious, I’ll gently clean the coils too. Dust and grime make your unit work harder and cool less. It’s a quick job that makes a big difference.

🧭 Final Thoughts from a Guy Who’s Been There

RV maintenance isn’t about being perfect—it’s about being prepared. I don’t do it all at once, and I’m not out here with a clipboard and lab coat. I just keep a checklist, knock things out when I’ve got time, and try to stay ahead of the curve.

Because nothing ruins a weekend faster than a breakdown you could’ve prevented with 20 minutes and a tube of sealant.

So grab a cold drink, throw on some music, and give your rig a little love. Your future self will thank you when you’re parked at a quiet campsite instead of waiting for a tow truck.
