Passport America and Other Campground Discount Memberships: Are They Worth It?

As an average camper who loves hitting the road without breaking the bank, I’ve often wondered if memberships like Passport America and other campground discount clubs are really worth the investment. After trying out Passport America myself and chatting with fellow campers, here’s my honest take.

What Is Passport America?

Passport America is a membership club that offers about 50% off nightly camping fees at over 1,400 participating campgrounds across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. For an annual fee (usually around $49), you get access to these discounts, which can add up fast if you camp frequently.

The Pros

  • Big Savings: The 50% discount can make a huge difference, especially if you stay at pricier campgrounds.
  • Wide Network: With over a thousand campgrounds, there’s usually a spot nearby wherever you go.
  • Easy to Use: Just show your membership card at check-in and enjoy the discount.
  • Bonus Perks: Some memberships include discounts on RV supplies, fuel, and other travel-related services.

The Cons

  • Not Always Available: Some popular campgrounds or peak dates might not accept the discount.
  • Limited to One or Two Nights: Many campgrounds limit the discount to one or two nights per stay.
  • Membership Cost: If you don’t camp often, the membership fee might not pay off.
  • Quality Varies: Some discount campgrounds are more basic or less maintained.

Other Discount Memberships

Besides Passport America, there are other clubs like Good Sam, KOA Value Card, and Harvest Hosts. Each has its own perks and costs, so it’s worth comparing based on your camping style.

My Experience

I bought a Passport America membership last year and used it on several trips. It definitely saved me money, especially on longer trips where I stayed at multiple campgrounds. However, I did run into a few places where the discount wasn’t accepted or was limited to just one night. Still, overall, it paid for itself in just a couple of uses.

Final Thoughts

If you’re a casual camper who camps a few times a year, Passport America and similar memberships can be a smart way to save money. But if you only camp once or twice, it might not be worth the upfront cost.

My advice? Think about how often you camp, where you like to stay, and check the
membership’s campground list before buying. If you’re planning multiple trips or longer stays, these memberships can definitely help stretch your camping budget.

Happy camping and saving out there!
